The Himalayan region of the country are quite rare in theatres. However, director Anup Baral has dared to bring forth the issues of people living in the region. The play Chiso Marubhumi Ko Katha Thangla written by Sarubhakta, that is being staged at Shilpee Theatre, Battisputali is an interesting watch. The play would be surprising for those who do not know about polyandry that is practised in the trans-Himalayan culture.Good team work, in-depth analysis of the tradition, culture and values of people living in the upper Himalayan region are well reflected in the play. Be it in the use of local vernaculars, clothing items or the tradition, minute details of people and places in the region have been well presented in 105-minute show. The play narrates the story of a family where a wife is mutually shared by all the brothers. Lopsang (Deeya Maskey) is a common wife of four brothers in the family. Amongst the four Pemba (Roy Shrestha), the youngest one, doesn’t want to follow the tradition of polyandry and doesn’t accept Lopsang as his wife. Rather, he loves Kelsang (Swostika Rajbhandari). As Pemba doesn’t accept Lopsang as his wife, there arises a conflict between two bothers — Gyalpo (Prakash Ghimire) and Pemba regarding their tradition and values. Will Pemba be ever able to raise his voice against the practice of polyandry? Or will he be silenced in the name of culture and tradition? The play is both interesting and informative. Several actors representing eagles and yaks are all fun to watch. It is also able to depict the hardships of people living in the mountain region — people travelling to Tibet even in the harsh weather, escaping death in accidents in the regions, being a porter to help mountain climbers, et cetera. It is also informative in showing the unique culture of performing funeral rites where the dead bodies are cut into pieces and are fed to eagles and vultures. Use of props, well matching costumes Docha and Chuwa, accent and dialogues of the actors are all well presented to give a taste of people living in the Himalayan region. The lights used, the snow falling scenes, the chorten, a bare tree, wind blowing et cetera are able to make one feel the settings of the highlands.
